Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Abdul Hamid Bador urged Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR chief Anwar Ibrahim to lodge police reports if the duo felt they had been slandered over claims involving a purported audio clip of a phone conversation between them.
Asked whether police would be recording statements from the two leaders, Abdul Hamid said they would do so when the time comes.
"Both parties, Anwar or Zahid, if they feel victimised or slandered, they can come forward with a report and investigations will be carried out from that angle," he said at a press conference broadcasted online today, adding that a separate probe on the audio clip is ongoing.
Hamid said the public could also lodge police reports if they felt distressed by the audio clip, which has gone viral on social media.
It was previously reported that Umno Youth exco member Wan Muhammad Azri Wan Deris had lodged a police report seeking an investigation to determine the authenticity of the four-minute audio clip uploaded on YouTube.
Meanwhile, the IGP said the results of forensic analysis on the audio clip will determine if any actions will be taken.
"If there are results from the analysis, it will be brought to the Attorney-General's Chambers for classification if there is a case under any provisions of the law," he added.Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and PKR head Anwar Ibrahim
The alleged audio clip had depicted Anwar congratulating Zahid over the latter's handling of the Umno general assembly.
Following his initial denial, Zahid had on Thursday urged Umno members to make their move on social media, seeking their loyalty and sincerity against alleged slanders.
Earlier today, Anwar questioned if a crime had been committed if the audio clip was found to be real.
The opposition leader also said he has yet to lodge a police report as he had just returned from a two-day Pakatan Harapan retreat in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, that ended yesterday.
